WHERE WE’VE BEEN AND WHERE WE ARE GOING
By Roxanne Wood
Community Compass has been a presence offering hope in our communities to those in need. Our mission statement sums up the heart of our efforts to do just that “To embrace our neighbors in love and point the way higher by providing services, education, and support to the community.” We are dedicated to giving people a hand up, not a handout. We exist to help people get on their feet, and then guide them so they sustain their success, with a purpose to help people go from lack to abundance, from weakness to strength and from dependence to independence. Our ultimate goal is to see people prosper and be in a position to give back to their community.
Some of our services include a food pantry, clothing center and transitional housing. A family fun night is held monthly during the school year at the Hugh J. Boyd, Jr. Elementary School located in Seaside Heights for students and their parents. Many families participate in this evening of playing board games, spending time as a family, and socializing over snacks.
This is only the beginning. Future plans for Community Compass are to initiate services to meet many more of the basic needs that underprivileged families may have. Many of us can look back on lean times, and have a fond memory of someone who came alongside in a time of need. Let us all be that special someone who cared!
If you or an organization you know would like to partner with Community Compass in donating your time, experience or goods that could better the quality of life of our neighbors, please call (732) 349-1550 ext. 307.

What kind of year was 2008 and how did Community Compass have an impact? Due to economic conditions, the needs this year were great. However, because we were able to collaborate with various non profit organizations, churches and ministries, we were able to meet the needs of many with ease.
What follows are brief descriptions of some things that were done to supply the basic needs of life, thereby strengthening the family.

When you look around, do you see the people that need food and clothing? There are many needs around us that we, as individuals, cannot fill. If we could partner together we could make a major impact on our community.

For a single mom on welfare, nothing could have helped her but the love of God. She was given food, clothing, and help with bills. While these things took care of her immediate needs, nothing could have given her hope like those who stood by her, prayed for her, and helped to care for her children. Today, because of God's love, she has received her college degree, has a job, and gives back to the community.
